Project updates

With EmpowerKatampe, AREAi seeks to build an informal community learning centre using over 300,000 plastic bottles sourced from streets and dumpsites while EDUCATING AND EQUIPPING 127 children and youth, as well as 30 women with digital, entrepreneurial, vocational, cognitive and soft skills through quality, accelerated learning sessions over the next 13 months.

Leveraging on a competency-based differentiated curriculum, bottle brick technology and an accelerated learning approach, our overarching goal is to provide an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective educational infrastructure in this rural community that has never had a school facility.

Lack of access to Quality Education and plastic pollution are 2 of the biggest issues facing developing countries across the world. What if communities could tackle both at the same time? Provide quality education for their children while repurposing plastic trash and ensuring PLASTIC WASTE does not end up in the streets, rivers and drainages. These two challenges are what we are seeking to solve through the implementation of EmpowerKatampe.

Katampe Ruga is a Fulani/Hausa settlement, several kilometres from Abuja metropolis, with over a population of 500 inhabitants whose primary occupation is farming and cattle rearing. In over twenty-five years of existence, Katampe Ruga has never experienced any form of formal education and has over a hundred children from across twenty-six families who are not in school and whose family members never attended school. They account for a fraction of the 63% of Nigerian children who never gets to enrol in school or acquire basic skills of livelihood.

On the other hand, a vast majority of plastic waste generated daily across Abuja city ends up littering the roadside, accumulates in landfills, blocks the drainage systems, cause flooding and often get washed off into the waterways. Even in Katampe and its neighbouring Fulani Settlements, single-use plastics – such as bottles, cups and straws – are in abundance, littering the streets and would take hundreds of years to break down. Many of these communities do not have adequate means to properly treat non-biodegradable trash, it often ends up being burned or ends up contaminating our urban and rural environments.

Both challenges can be addressed and hence the EducationInBottles intervention

AREAi, through its Education-In-Bottles initiative, therefore seeks to deliver an innovative and effective intervention approach that provides an efficient solution to two major global problems-ensuring access to high-quality education in Katampe and eradicating plastic waste pollution in some of Abuja’s high-need communities through construction of 1 blocks of 3 alternative learning spaces for Katampe communities using over 300, 000 bottles sourced from the streets of Abuja.

We are ensuring access to a safe, clean, and comfortable educational atmosphere for these children and women to enjoy the dividends of quality learning and skills development sessions in these plastic bottles-based learning spaces that are environmental-friendly, fireproof, bulletproof and can withstand earthquakes.

Expected Impact & Benefits

Apart from being an inspirational, innovative, and regenerative campaign against plastic waste that ensures tons of PET bottles salvaged across garbage sites, offices, and communities across and around Abuja metropolis are repurposed, EmpowerKatampe will be an opportunity to:

  • Create access to alternative education, training and empowerment opportunities for youth, children and women through a traditional innovation that expands access to quality lifelong learning. Children will build digital, entrepreneurial, vocational, cognitive and soft skills within the learning spaces across the next 13 months.

  • Improve sanitation and environmental cleanliness, ensuring environmental sustainability while ensuring healthy living conditions in the slums and suburbs. Over 300,000 plastic bottles are removed from the biosphere and from the industrial recycling system.

  • Provide a source of a sustainable source of livelihood, income generation and robust job opportunities for plastic waste collectors thereby bringing micro capital to low-income earners.
